Deshamanya Dr. Sarath Jayathissa, a leading entrepreneur and an academic scholar who had a practical vision, envisioned the establishment of an institute of pure excellence to be on par with the international community. As a result, at the very dawn of the 21st century, LEEDS International School was gifted to Matara community on 20th June 2000, as the first ever and only center of excellence for international academia with full affiliation to esteemed international scholarly bodies such as Pearson. From its modest beginnings, with a small group of teachers and a limited number of students under the guidance of the 1st principal, Mr. W.J Gunasekara, LEEDS Matara has evolved into a thriving academic institution.
Presently, the school provides high-quality English-medium education up to advanced level for over 1500 students. During the last 25 years, the school has expanded its infrastructure, as well as student enrollment.
